A team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad led by Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr Utpal Shah, gave a new lease of life to a 63-year-old man by performing a high-risk heart surgery— the first of its kind in Gujarat.
The patient, a resident of Mahudi, in Gujarat, was admitted for aortic and mitral valve replacements at the hospital. While performing the double valve replacement surgery, the doctors discovered an inflammation in the main artery and an aneurysmal ascending aorta with a diameter of 5.5 cm. The discovery added to the complexity of the surgery and challenges for the team of surgeons. The patient needed Bentall procedure + Double valve replacement surgery.
The team of doctors then decided to perform both the surgeries in one go. The patient’s family was made aware of the life-threatening situation and the next course of action. After a go ahead from the family, the additional surgery was performed. The procedure was successfully performed by Dr Utpal Shah and his team in eight hours. For the first time in Gujarat, a surgery with such a high risk was performed. The patient was discharged on the fourth day after surgery.
Dr Utpal Shah, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, said, “A surgery of this type was attempted for the first time in Gujarat. The high-risk surgery was performed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).”
Following the surgery, the doctors ensured speedy recovery of the patient and he has now resumed his routine life.
